Rudder Stock

Hull Outfittings

Rudder Stock

The vertical shaft that transmits steering torque from the steering gear down to the rudder blade.

WhatsApp

Overview

The rudder stock is the shaft that connects the steering gear above to the rudder blade below, running through the rudder trunk and its bearings. Turning the stock is what turns the blade; every other rudder component exists to support, seal or guide this one shaft. It is sized for torque, not just bending load, since steering gear applies a twisting force the full length of the stock whenever the helm moves. Its keyway or coupling to the steering gear quadrant is a fatigue-critical detail checked at survey.
