Hull Outfittings

Apu Block

A rudder trunk bearing block that supports the rudder stock and permits it to rotate under load.

WhatsApp

Overview

The apu block, more commonly called the rudder carrier or rudder trunk bearing, is the bearing assembly that supports the weight of the rudder stock inside the rudder trunk while letting it rotate freely as the helm is put over. It carries continuous load whenever the vessel is underway, so its bearing surface and seal are wear items inspected at every drydocking. Excess clearance here shows up as play in the rudder that steering gear then has to work against.
