Rudder Blade

Hull Outfittings

Rudder Blade

The flat, streamlined surface that deflects water flow to steer a vessel, mounted on the rudder stock.

Overview

The rudder blade is the streamlined plate that actually does the steering: turning it into the flow of water past the hull deflects that flow to one side, and the reaction force swings the stern the other way. It is a welded steel fabrication, often with an internal frame, built to take continuous hydrodynamic loading and the occasional grounding or contact impact without permanent deformation. That is why blade condition and its welds are a standard drydock inspection item.
