Rudder Horn

A fixed hull structure that carries the lower rudder bearing on a semi-spade or horn-type rudder arrangement.

Overview

The rudder horn is a fixed, hull-integrated structure, part of the sternframe on many vessels, that carries the lower pintle bearing on a semi-spade rudder, sharing the load with the upper bearing in the rudder trunk rather than leaving the stock to cantilever unsupported. Because it is welded into the hull structure itself rather than bolted as a fitting, its condition is a structural survey item. Cracking around a rudder horn is checked at every classification survey given the fatigue loading it sees over a vessel's service life.
