Windlass

Deck machinery that raises and lowers the anchor and controls the anchor chain under load.

WhatsApp

Overview

A windlass is the deck machine that pays out and heaves in the anchor chain, engaging its wildcat, a sprocketed drum shaped to the chain's links, so the chain can be controlled precisely rather than simply let run free. It also has to hold the anchor and its full scope of chain stationary once let go. That is why a windlass brake, not the drive motor, is what actually bears the anchor's weight at anchor; the motor's job is only raising and lowering it.
