Overview
An air compressor draws in and pressurises ambient air, storing or delivering it on demand to run pneumatic tools, abrasive blasting equipment, and pneumatic control or starting systems, the utility that a shipyard's grinders, chippers, wrenches and blast pots all draw from. Sizing is a matter of matching sustained flow, not just peak pressure, to the tools running at once: a blast pot alone can draw more continuous air than several hand tools combined, which is why yard capacity is planned around the heaviest simultaneous demand. Compressed air typically passes through a dryer and filter before reaching tools, since moisture carried in the line corrodes pneumatic equipment and can contaminate a blast pot's abrasive.
