Rudder Pintle

Hull Outfittings

Rudder Pintle

The pin that locates and bears a rudder in its gudgeon, forming the hinge the rudder swings on.

Overview

The rudder pintle is the pin half of the pintle-and-gudgeon hinge that many rudder arrangements use: it is fixed to the rudder and engages a bearing socket, the gudgeon, fixed to the hull or rudder horn, forming the axis the rudder swings on. It is a wear part by design, since the bearing surface takes constant relative motion under load. Its clearance is measured at every drydocking, since excess play here is felt directly as sloppy steering response.
