Gas Shielded Arc Welding

Gas Shielded Arc Welding

An arc welding process that shields the weld pool with an externally supplied gas instead of a flux coating.

WhatsApp

Overview

Gas shielded arc welding feeds an externally supplied gas, typically an inert gas like argon, or an active mix with CO2, around the arc to protect the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination, in place of the flux coating a stick electrode carries. Removing the flux layer means no slag to chip off between passes, giving a cleaner weld and faster throughput on multi-pass joints, though wind can blow the shielding gas away, which is why the process is generally kept to indoor or sheltered work rather than open deck in a breeze. Shielding gas flow rate is set for the specific torch and joint, since too little leaves the weld pool exposed to the air and too much draws in turbulent air from outside the gas envelope, both producing the same porosity defect.
