Overview

Weight matters more in a bathroom fitting aboard a vessel than in a building, since every kilogram fitted above the waterline affects stability calculations the naval architect has already balanced. That is one reason marine sanitary fixtures favour lighter composite or thin-gauge stainless construction over the heavier ceramic used ashore. Fittings also have to clear class society requirements for the compartment they sit in, which a fixture bought off-the-shelf from a general supplier is not guaranteed to meet.
