Sanitary fixtures fitted out for shipboard accommodation, built to marine standards for weight, corrosion and motion.

Overview

Fixtures in a vessel's crew accommodation have to tolerate constant salt-air exposure and vibration that a shore-side bathroom never sees, which is why marine sanitary equipment is specified in corrosion-resistant metal and secured with vibration-rated fixings rather than the standard fittings a building trade supplier would offer. Space is also a real constraint: accommodation compartments are typically smaller than a shore equivalent, so fixture dimensions are chosen against the actual cabin or head layout rather than a generic size. Ventilation is built into the compartment design alongside the fixtures themselves, since a sealed steel space with no airflow accumulates condensation and odour far faster than an equivalent room ashore.
