Overview

Beyond shackles and swivels, ground tackle hardware includes the chain stopper that takes the chain's load off the windlass once the anchor is set, and the devil's claw or bottle screw used to secure chain for sea passage. Each has one job: hold the chain's full working load without the windlass brake bearing it continuously, since a brake is not rated for that duty over a long passage. Which pieces a given vessel needs depends on its own deck arrangement, confirmed against the vessel rather than assumed from a general description.
