Overview

The hardware that connects a chain to its anchor and to itself is subject to the same class survey as the chain and anchor it joins, since a failure here releases the whole anchor rather than damaging one link. A joining shackle is deliberately shaped differently from a standard chain shackle so it can be identified at a glance during inspection. As with the chain itself, grade and size are matched to the vessel's equipment certificate rather than chosen independently.
