Overview

The anchor is one half of a vessel's ground tackle, the other half being the chain that connects it to the windlass and the hull. Holding power comes from how the anchor's shape interacts with the seabed once set, which is why different bottom types, mud, sand, rock, favour different anchor designs. A shipyard's anchor stock exists for replacement after loss or damage and for outfitting a newbuild, both situations where the vessel's own specification decides the exact type required. That confirmation happens against the actual vessel, not against a catalogue listing.
