Steel Wire Rope

Wire rope laid from steel strands around a core, for mooring, lifting and standing rigging where fibre rope lacks the strength.

WhatsApp

Overview

Steel wire rope is built from multiple strands of steel wire laid helically around a core, fibre or steel, giving it far higher breaking strength for a given diameter than any fibre rope, at the cost of flexibility and ease of handling. Construction varies with the job: more wires per strand gives flexibility for running rope over sheaves, fewer and thicker wires gives abrasion resistance for standing rigging or ground tackle. The right lay and construction is specified per application rather than one rope serving every use.
