A fairlead is an open guide, a smooth-edged frame, roller set or closed eye, through which a mooring or towing line passes as it runs from a winch or bollard out over the side of the vessel. Its job is purely to control the line's path and angle, not to hold load itself. Without one, a line under tension cuts across whatever edge it happens to run over, wearing both the line and the structure it rubs against. A fairlead takes that wear on a surface built to take it, fitted wherever a line changes direction at the rail.
