A double column bollard carries two upright posts on a single base plate. Two separate mooring lines, or one line figure-eighted for extra holding power, can be made fast at the same deck position without interfering with each other. The base is through-bolted or welded to reinforced deck structure, because the load a bollard sees is not its own weight but the full pull of a vessel against wind, current or a tug line. The fitting has to carry that without moving.
