A cable guide is a fixed hull fitting that directs a mooring or towing line along a set path toward a fairlead, bollard or winch. It keeps the line off the deck edge and clear of gear it could otherwise snag or chafe against under load. A line running at the wrong angle wears faster and puts uneven load on the fitting behind it. That is why the guide is replaced as routine hull outfitting rather than only after something else fails.
