A fairlead controls the path a mooring or towing line takes as it runs from a winch or bollard out over the side of a vessel, without itself bearing the line's load. Designs vary from a simple closed eye to a roller-fairlead that reduces friction on a line under heavy, continuous tension, and which type a given position needs depends on the load and angle the line sees there. Fitted wherever a line changes direction at the rail, a fairlead is what stops a taut line sawing against bare deck edge.
