Overview
An oily water separator processes bilge water on board, separating oil from water so what is discharged meets the 15 parts-per-million limit MARPOL Annex I sets for oil content, rather than requiring a vessel to hold all bilge water for shore disposal. It is standard equipment on any vessel over the size threshold that convention sets, and its performance is verified at survey against that same limit. Which unit a vessel needs is sized to its own bilge water volume and certified to the specific vessel, confirmed at the time of order rather than assumed from a listing.
