Flux Cored Wire

Tubular welding wire with a flux core, for higher deposition rates on thicker steel sections.

Overview

Flux-cored wire is a tubular consumable filled with flux rather than the solid rod used in conventional MIG welding. The flux shields the weld pool as it burns, letting the process run at higher current and deposit more metal per pass than solid wire of the same diameter. That matters most on thick plate and long seams, which is most of what shipyard structural and hull work involves. Fewer passes to complete a joint means less time with a vessel out of service.
